« WHAT IS A HACKATHON? »

A hackathon is a competitive educational event in which students come together to develop an idea for a project into a real product. A hackathon does not have anything to do with 'hacking' in the usual sense of defeating the security of computers. During a 24 hours period student work together to build a project from scratch, often with very little sleep. The goal of a hackathon is not to build a polished product, but to hack something together and in the process make mistakes and learn new ways of solving problems. At Way Cool Hacks there will educational resources, including seminars and mentors, and an environment that will enable their success.

« WILL THERE BE SUPERVISION? »

Yes, there will be adult supervision. Be nice, respectful, and have fun! Hackers are expected to behave appropriately and safely at all times, and abide by the School and State Code of Conduct.

« WHO CAN PARTICIPATE? »

There will be a team mixer at the start of the hackathon. Interested in attending but not a high school student? Consider signing up to be a mentor.

« DO I HAVE TO HAVE ANY PRIOR EXPERIENCE TO PARTICIPATE? »

No! We welcome coders of all experience levels. This is a fantastic learning opportunity! You will be able to attend educational workshops run by industry professionals. We will also have experienced adult mentors on hand to help you learn and succeed. Mentors, as well as other student coders, can help you create something even if you've never coded before.

« DO I NEED TO STAY FOR THE ENTIRE HACKATHON? »

We do recommend that you stay the whole time so that you can gain the most experience possible, but you do not have to stay. If you leave you will not be allowed to return until an appropriate time.
